By the time you read this, I will be back home from an epic summer road trip to New England. To say it was fun is an understatement. In the midst of RV trips, family visits and lobster rolls, I also learned lessons that apply to business. What I will do differently now:

1. Check my assumptions. We thought that we could drive until tired, find a hotel along the interstate and sleep in a warm bed. We soon found out differently when every room in Denver was booked by 8:30 p.m. Surprises happen when what worked in the past doesn’t work now. What I’ve changed: We plan one step ahead of our schedule.

2. Know my next move. We quickly got in a rhythm: drive and visit during the day, have a nice dinner, and bed early at night. Once we created a system, we were able to avoid unforeseen circumstances. (Example: Because we booked our room the night before, we avoided the crowd in St. Louis that resulted when a storm left 100,000 people without power.) I will use systems more in my business now.

3. Watch my timing. I overestimated how many miles we could cover in a day. I didn’t factor in construction zones, slow traffic or cool stops. Result: Fatigue came before our next hotel room. Once I gave myself a 25% “pad,” the trip became a lot more fun. Yes, I will change my expectations on what I can get done.

The biggest lesson: How we approach adventure is how we approach life. How we respond to the unforeseen is the same in business as in the personal arena. I will definitely use these lessons while on my thought leadership journey. I hope they help you, too.
