A New Benchmark For Our Worth?

Ever wonder why silly people in reality TV make so much money?  (When I found out that Mike “The Situation” made $5M in appearances, my head almost exploded.)  Here’s one reason:  influence.  Yep, the more people you inspire to buy stuff, the more you are worth.

According to SalesForce.com, this idea is trickling down to employee evaluation.  The thinking:  if you want to make a big change, get the opinion leaders on board first.  To help identify those folks, the software giant has added a new feature on their Chatter system called Influencer.  According to the company, it measures how influential you are within your company by determining how others respond to your posts on corporate social networks.  Those with a high score get courted for adopting new practices.

Prediction:  this trend is coming to our market like a tidal wave.  I see PR firms reaching out to folks they assign a high score to.  Watch sponsorship, spokesperson deals come out of nowhere.  Not only do we have to be on social media, but we need to create a specific community of followers.  I see this factor rising in speaker selection criteria as well.

Plan your marketing efforts accordingly.  And check out this Fast Company article for more details about Influencers.
