Advice From The Top

Between the recovery and mergers/acquisitions, there has been a revolving door at the C-suite.  What’s different now?  The CEOs are coming in from the outside with less background and experience at the helm.  According to Booz Allen’s annual study on the world’s 2,500 largest public companies, over 14% of the CEOs were replaced.  That is high compared to the previous year, but pretty much average over 7 years.

The most interesting finding is that many of these CEOs are new to the job as well as the company.  The highlights:

  • CEOs are under more pressure to perform earlier in their tenure than in the past.
  • Three industries:  utilities, telecommunications, and financial services hire the most outsider CEOs.
  • CEOs hired from the outside were almost twice as likely to be forced out.
  • New CEOs get mentored by the outgoing CEO, who stayed on as chair of the company.

Studies like these help us experts fully understand the pressure cooker that is in the C-suite.  This information can also drive the questions we ask and the conversations we have.  Here’s the link to the Spring article on the study.
