Can We Put America Back to Work?

Did you know that federal worker education grants cover soft skills training?  I assumed that these funds were for skilled training, such as manufacturing.  Big mistake, according to this article in the Fall issue of Training magazine.  It appears that the Feds recognize that if folks can’t communicate, work together, or navigate change, the tech skills are useless.

So…can premium-priced thought leaders participate?  Yep.  But not in the usual ways.  While there are no big events or lucrative coaching contracts, we can align our work to this deserving cause.  A couple of ideas:

  • Due to budget cuts, a lot of soft skill training is moving online.  Do you have current modules that can be used?  If not, can you partner with a community college to license your intellectual property?  Sure.
  • Many states have career readiness programs to help underemployed workers.  Some states even have certification programs for this area.  Is your content a good fit there?  Won’t know until you ask.

Many of us assume that the community college/university network has this covered.  And they are a big player.  I do think there is room for us to participate passively.  Not only does our content get put to good use, but this is also a cause we can participate in with pride.  And who knows?  Maybe this is a good “foot in the door” way to create other opportunities with organizations who participate in the program.
