Finding Opportunities In Uncertain Times

I have an ambivalent relationship with chaos. Part of me can’t stand the volatility. But the other part of me loves the excitement of finding new ways to serve.

The key to dealing with chaos is to put yourself in the eye of the storm. To keep myself focused and grounded, here are two questions I ask myself:

  1. What has changed for me? Media reports are good for big-picture forecasts. Now it’s time to put your business under a microscope. Assess your situation from a blank-page perspective. Pretend you are a potential client; you have no vested interest in the outcome. Ask yourself: How have your buyers changed? What are their other options? What is the marketplace really telling you?

Listen: How to determine your next best step?

  1. What can I control? Sometimes we take on unnecessary challenges because we just have to “do something!” Or we throw our hands up and think, “It’s just chaos out there. There’s nothing I can do!” To find your footing, stop and determine your role. Ask yourself: In this moment, what can I control? What can I influence?

When markets get crazy, the last thing you want to do is to be crazy with them. By asking these questions, you can find solid ground and a path forward.
