Want more access to the C-suite?  Then check out executive retreats.  These smaller invite-only events are filled with folks who don’t show up at the typical association event.  This informative article from Successful Meetings lifts the veil on what executives really want.  Highlights (and my observations):

  • The biggest difference in the agenda is depth.  If you can’t do a deep dive into the issues, don’t bother with these venues.  These folks don’t suffer 30,000-foot fools gladly.
  • Platform skills have a different meaning here.  Less performance, more exchange of ideas.  Stories are still powerful here, but don’t get in the way of peer-to-peer discussions.  Prepare for a lively debate and an exchange of ideas.
  • Check out the groups who hold the retreats.  They are not your typical associations.  Don’t assume you know how they work based on your experience with industry associations.
  • Check out the typical speakers.  Your biggest competitors are the corporate folks and the futurist with a narrow focus.  Why?  Again, it’s the in-depth perspective.

Many thought leaders want to go beyond talking to influencers and get to the real buyers.  Executive retreats have that access for those who are branded correctly.  Proceed accordingly.
