Get On The List

One of the best ways to bump your profile: be on a magazine’s top whatever list. One mention there beats a 100 press releases and media mentions.

Exhibit A: the 100 most creative people in business by Fast Company Magazine. Pay attention to the variety. Notice that not all of these people are from large corporations. Some are from the non-profit world. Some even have their own shop. And some are from – gasp! – the ivory towers of academia.

Pay attention to the patterns on this list. Conventional wisdom is A. Creative person does B instead. Things change as a result. Something great happens.

My question: why can’t we do this? Experts are so good at seeing the problem. What would happen if we implemented the solution? My guess: we would be on a list like this.

Moral of the story: A great way to bump up your prominence is a cool project or campaign. Look at what you want to change, and find folks who will change with you. Then…let the world know.
