How to Present to Execs

Many of us want access to the C-suite.  After all, that’s where the “real” buyers are, those with the big (and flexible) budgets.  Fewer know what to do when we get there.  This Harvard Business Review blog is a great overview at 30,000 feet.  My favorite part:  give these folks what they want first.

  • Knowing what to do isn’t enough.  The biggest barrier for most experts:  giving up our schtick.  We spend so much time crafting our speech that it’s easy to assume everyone wants to hear it.  Especially when we get kudos at other industry events.
  • What looks like storytelling to other audiences is considered rambling at this one.  And rambling in the spirit of storytelling can be fatal here.
  • Good writers know that they have to sometimes “kill their darlings”, those turns of phrases that they love so much for the sake of the point.  Speakers would do well to heed that advise as well.
