Professional Speakers: A Disruptive Trend Is Heading Your Way

Professional Speakers: A Disruptive Trend Is Heading Your Way

This just in: New college grads think they are better prepared than the managers who hire them. (Stop laughing.)

Yep, this report from PayScale on the skills gap is a fascinating look at how grads can use certain skills to bump up their salary. Check out the chart of skills lacking in new grads. Zoom in on the second item in the hard skills list: public speaking. This has big ramifications for speakers. My take on it:

• Public speaking skills are expected from new employees. Speaking at events is now a personal branding tool. If speaker association execs think they are flooded with proposals now, well, just wait. This new batch of free speakers will bring the most pressure on experts who speak to sell.

• Yes, universities teach presentation skills. But it’s not enough. There’s a great opportunity for presentation skills experts who go beyond the classroom and into blended learning. Price points will be tight here.

My question: If public speaking is now considered as a rank-and-file trait, how do the leaders use speaking to stand out? You guessed it: the keynote market. This is gonna get interesting.
