Redefining Work

Labor Day weekend is upon us here in the U.S., signaling the end of summer. (Here in Phoenix, the triple degree heat will continue.) Let’s drill down on the changes in the world of work according to this provocative Fast Company article about freelancers.

Move past the political predictions about wealth and job security. Pay attention to the number of factors coming together to form the perfect storm that changes everything. This article explores what happens to spending and the U.S. economy if full-time jobs of the past aren’t coming back. I see both obstacles and opportunities in the ripple effects.

Three questions we should ask ourselves to take full advantage of these changes:

  1. In light of more discernible spending, what changes do I need to make in what I offer?
  2. How can I generate revenue if owning things has become a burden? If I offer experiences, how do I describe / brand that intangible?
  3. How are my clients adjusting to these changes? What/how can I sell to those whose markets (and income) are impacted by these changes?

Let’s take this long weekend to explore what’s next for our businesses. Our best answers come when we step back and look at what is on the horizon.
