Reinventions in Consulting

Well, it had to happen sometime.  The very factors that have disrupted so many industries have now come to pass in the consulting industry.  This fabulous Harvard Business Review article from Clayton Christensen lays out what’s going on and why.

Don’t think disruption only happens to the big consulting and legal firms.  Stuff rolls downhill and these factors also impact us.  Our best next step:  pay attention.  The biggest mistake we make is to ignore new competitors and their business models.  It’s easy to do when their offerings are inferior.  That’s temporary; by the time the quality improves close to our level, it’s too late to compete.  For a big enough discount, many buyers will go for the “good enough” solutions.

The good news:  we are nimble and we are quick.  We can change on a dime (if we want to).  Let’s not wait until new competitors have momentum.  We can meet these folks head-to-head with new ways to do business.  The time is now.  Use the holiday season to reflect on these changes and put new ideas on your calendar for 2014.

Many thanks to Rebecca Morgan and SpeakerNet News for sharing this report.
