Seduced by Opportunity

Had an interesting conversation with an expert who could be on the cusp of greatness.  Or could flame out.  Only time will tell.

You could tell she had something special.  Her insights were right on target.  The problem:  she was getting a lot of notice.  From very “sexy” places.  These media opportunities gave her the impression that she was “good to go”.  That all she needed to do was to suit up and show up.  What people weren’t telling her:  there were other folks who had the same idea.  Who got the same direction.  And she was going to sound like one of many competing for a very small space.

I tried to be nice yet honest.  Don’t think I got through to her.  The potential of opportunities not yet obtained were very loud in her ear.  So let me be more clear with you.  There is a big difference between discussing the potential of something (like a TV show) and getting a green light for a TV show.  A big difference between consulting with clients who know you and competing for clients who have multiple options.

There are a lot of opportunities out there.  There is a long road between potential and a done deal.  Don’t be seduced by potential opportunity.
