The Big Fear That Stops Us

Yes, the rumors are true.  I have finally joined the Twitter universe.  Why am I so late to this party?  Simple reason:  I was scared.  Here’s my train of thought / trip to the dark side:

  • I don’t know what to say in 140 characters.
  • If I don’t say the right thing, I will just die.
  • And my death won’t be noticed because no one will follow me anyway.

Pay attention to that last one.  How many times do we want to show up somewhere but don’t because we are afraid no one will join us?  What does that mean when we come to places like Twitter and have fewer followers than our friends?  It’s one thing to be an outsider, to not be popular.  It’s another to publicize that fact, to let everyone see just how unpopular you are.

And how many times do we hid that fear with fabulous strategic reasons such as:  takes too much time, it doesn’t matter if I do or don’t, and — my favorite — how does this really grow my business anyway?

So…I’m stepping out from behind my BS.  I’m feeling the fear and doing it anyway.  Here’s my handle if you want to witness me stumbling towards brilliance and brevity in 140 characters.  Hey, could be fun to watch.  @VKSullivan
