The Secret Skills Gap

Everyone is talking about the upcoming “skills gap” and the war for talent. According to this study by digital education company Hyper Island, maybe we’re putting all our eggs in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) basket.

With over 500 leaders surveyed in communication, tech and business development industries, 78% cited “personality” as the most desirable “skill” in employees. That begs the question: what traits are most important? Drive was the most popular at 14%, creativity (at 12%) and “open mind” (at a close 11%). This infographic gives you the findings at a glance.

My take: these skills can be taught. They are also nurtured with the right corporate culture. For thought leaders with this expertise, you have a gold mine sitting right in front of you. Your next move: create the connection between your work and talent management. You might be surprised by the market response.
