Just when you thought it was safe—I joined forces again with colleague and fabulous person Patty Azar for her radio show The Magnificent Leader. As usual, it was a hoot!

After a quick dance party to the promo music, we got right down to business to answer this question: How do brilliant people sabotage their thought leadership?

Does that really happen? Yes, it does. A lot.

The culprit: our passion. Yep, the thing that drives us can also drive us over the cliff. It happens during two junctures in our business life:

• In the beginning. During our quest to live purposefully, we stumble upon our best gift to give. Eureka! We are so happy with this discovery that we hold on to that gift for dear life. We start looking at all the pretty words used to describe this gift. Then we go out in the marketplace and are crushed when buyers put us in the “free” category.

• During a big transition. You’re already successful and looking for the next big adventure. Either the market’s saturated or a new competitor has disrupted you. You know what worked before, so you do it again in a new arena. And the effort fails spectacularly when buyers think you’re a cheap imitation of someone else.

It’s easy to lose confidence at this point. Don’t. Click here to learn what to do instead. (You’ll also learn the two dark secrets about thought leadership that no one talks about. Yes, Patty and I went there.) It will be the best 50-minute investment you can make. Enjoy!
