How to Position Expectations to Clients

What clients can expect

It’s August, and I am gearing up for the last of a four-part series of summer adventures. One thing I learned on the road: How to position expectations to prospective clients. Take a look at the below sign:

Restaurant rules sign

That sign belongs to a popular beachside bar. It’s the perfect example of how you can outline the rules of engagement and still be inviting. Strategies you can use:

• Anticipate the first questions: In this case, most places have a host stand, so of course that’s the first thing folks will look for. The first point answers that question and then gives one request – picnic tables are for the larger groups. Most folks will comply if they know what to do up front. How to apply: describe the first and next steps so prospective clients can see what’s ahead.

• Keep the rules simple — and the consequences clear: Instead of a list of rules, the terms are subjective and reasonable: be cool, be tolerant, be respectful. If you’re an “idiot,” it’s clear what will happen next: told (not asked) to leave. Boundaries appear reasonable when the alternative looks worse. How to apply: Set up your requests by explaining why first.

Prospective clients want to know what it is like to work with you. Signs like this are a low-risk way for them to decide. So, make your rules of engagement clear up front, but do it in way that isn’t restrictive or combative.
