Immersive Experiences Will Disrupt the Events Industry

Heads up: Disruption is coming for the events industry. Not now, but soon.

Immersive experiences, like the Illuminarium event Fast Company wrote about, are going to affect events and even corporate training initiatives.

Backed by heavy hitters such as a former Esquire publisher, a set designer for The Oscars, and the filmmaker behind Hamilton, the Illuminarium is a “cross between a museum, a movie theatre and virtual reality.” The big difference is the space. It’s bigger and created for group experiences.

It won’t stop there. It’s going to spill over into events such as meetings and conventions—and sooner than you think. My prediction: Once this experience goes mainstream, corporate sales and client events will hop onboard. Then it will expand into leadership and general corporate conferences.

What should we do about this? Start thinking about how to turn your message into an experience. What would the background look like? What kind of wow moments could you create that would drive the message home? How can your audience become part of your speech?

As the article notes, this is part of an overall trend towards the immersive. The scaling has already begun, and there’s a lot of funding to hasten the implementation. When this becomes easier and popular, immersive experiences will be the expectation for our events, as well. Be prepared.
