Is America Still Free? A Fourth of July Reflection on Our Rights

Where has the year gone?! I can’t believe we are midway through summer, with the Fourth of July weekend upon us.

As I hide inside from the brutal Phoenix Arizona heat, I find myself reflecting on what freedom really looks like today. And one big question keeps coming to mind: Are we as independent as we think we are? Is America still free in the ways that matter most?

Sure, we have choices. But how free are we, really, to go about our lives when someone can be arrested—and even sent to another country—based solely on the accusations of political leaders? Without due process, the right to challenge the government’s claims disappears. And when that right is gone, isn’t a piece of our freedom gone, too?

What happens to liberty when the government feels empowered to ignore court rulings it disagrees with? Or brush off laws it doesn’t like? And maybe even more importantly: How do we respond when that happens?

Our system was built with checks and balances to prevent any one group from trampling the rights of another. Power is meant to be divided, so that no branch of government can go rogue without being held accountable by the others. But that system only works if those in power choose to respect the roles outlined in the Constitution.

And this year, that respect feels like it’s fading.

Independence isn’t a guarantee. It doesn’t just show up and stick around. We remain free only when we insist—loudly and clearly—that those in power uphold the agreement our ancestors fought so hard to create. Because if we don’t, we risk answering “no” to the question: Is America still free?
