Hybrid work environments will impact larger enterprise-wide projects, pushing on-the job training to the fore and creating demand for digital formats. As a recent Fast Company article points out:

“In this hybrid environment, employees are looking for ways to develop their skills and careers in order to thrive in a changing landscape. Managers want to engage and retain their teams, no matter where they’re based. And companies need to go digital fast while bringing their workforce along. Hybrid work demands that companies find fresh ways to help employees build the skills they need to succeed.”

2 Training Trends

Trainers must rethink and refine how they deliver education in the digital space. Here are two trends we are seeing that open the door for an extensive relationship past the corporate universities many workshop leaders are used to:

• Smaller delivery systems. Yes, “snackable” content has been promoted for a while. The difference here is the delivery system. What’s hot now: small training moments throughout the workday. Key data point: 75% of employees prefer that format over formal training. Ask yourself: Can my content be delivered in such small doses that folks don’t have to remember the previous module? In other words, can your content stand alone in “micro-moments?”

• Practice is a priority. Folks want to learn a skill, then go practice. Translation: The days of teaching a skill and leaving are over. This is a great opportunity for ongoing support. Ask yourself: How can I be more accessible during the practice stage? Think clinics, office hours, etc.

Trainers need to go beyond interrelated module-based learning and start participating in the delivery system. The days are over when we assess, present, follow up once, and then leave. Employee development will be an embedded experience.
