What to Ask Your Colleagues For

In my last post, we explored the impact crowdsourcing has on speaker selection. Let’s drill down now on how we use crowdsourcing in our thought leadership business.

I see a lot of calls for help in social media groups. It warms my heart to see the outpouring of ideas and offers of free consulting. However, I don’t usually respond to these requests. Why? I’m concerned that the help I give can do more damage than good.

Some requests are too “big” to be answered in a simple post. The best answers require more in-depth thinking and analysis than what many good-natured folks are willing to give for free. So, we give what we can, which often just prolongs the need for additional help. The recipient spends time and money implementing advice that sounds fabulous but falls just short of success. Result: more wheel spinning with too little progress.

Go ahead and ask for help – that’s what communities are for. But be strategic about it. When we ask for wrong things, we will get answers that can set us off in the wrong direction.
