How To Be the “Insider” Everyone Listens To

A lot of thought leaders are great at telling the truth or debunking the myths. But as this Fast Company article shows, nothing can beat telling a secret.

Move past the topic. What makes this article compelling: an insider telling the truth that can’t be told. This positioning – “the insider” – is a great way to stand out. Let’s drill down on the strategy behind the technique. Why this works:

• It applies the author’s background. How do you stand out if your colleagues have similar backgrounds? By sharing what others will not share. Next time you write content, ask yourself: What is not being discussed about this topic? And go there.

• It speaks to motive. When you understand someone’s motivations, you can better understand why they do what they do. It broadens understanding. We can write about motive, too. Ask yourself: What’s the story around the behavior?

When we translate what is happening but not discussed, we can appear as an insider with secrets. And everyone likes to know a secret.
