Timing Is Everything

I have a lot of conversations about competing priorities. Folks often ask me, “What should I do first?”

Here’s my three-part system for navigating the world of competing priorities:

1. Desire before strategy. Before I get strategic about a new adventure, I ask myself about motivation and desire. I have a tendency to go big or go home, so the first question is, “What am I really signing up for here?” And do I really want to do that? These questions help me separate idle dreaming and willingness.

2. Strategy before implementation. While I don’t expect all my ducks to be lined up, I don’t do anything without a strategic approach. Why? Because the cost of fixing something is higher than doing it right the first time. If strategy is off, so will implementation.

3. Tools before opportunities. I get excited when an opportunity pops up out of nowhere. My inclination: Grab before it gets away. The problem: If I don’t have tools (such as website or video for speakers), I end up wasting that opportunity. It’s harder to fix a bad first impression than to create a great one in the first place.

Again, don’t go for perfection here. (Been there. Not pretty.)

There are five different ways to spend every moment (and dollar) you have. This systematic approach helps me make quicker decisions about what to go after and what to leave behind. What is your system? How do you decide?
