As advisors, we ask clients to do things they don’t know how to do. So, it’s just a matter of time before they hit a wall and are unable to implement what we advise. Now what?

This obstacle occurs when we take clients to uncharted territory. We go where their success may not have the same impact. Here’s what I do to facilitate the new path forward:

• Create a new structure. Too many of us use the same approach without asking, “Will this way work in the new environment?” Many times, the answer is no. So, when client flounders, drill down on changes at the macro level first.

• Give extra time. Too many folks assume that if it takes three days to do the usual things, then it will take three days to do this new thing. Ummm … nope. Give clients at least 50% more time (even when they say can do it sooner). They’ll need that time to explore.

Any thought leader who advocates innovation has clients who are not used to struggling. When you help those clients realize that everything is different, their journey can go a lot smoother.
