Being a data nerd, studies and stats usually get my attention. And a recent Marketing Land article about an Adobe Analytics study on podcast usage is no exception.

Articles like these create a great business case for a format. Before we jump on this bandwagon, though let’s drill down. Here are two things to look for before deciding if creating a podcast is best way to showcase your thought leadership:

• What’s hot, what’s not: Comedy and educational categories are popular here. Panel discussions and advice are not. So, ask yourself: Does my perspective fit in the most popular categories? If not, prepare for a long, hard slog.

• The environment: According to this article, listening in while driving and working is the typical style of engagement. So, if your perspective is snackable, then great. If you require more focus, not great.

A lot of us tend to look at a format, see the growth, and think, “Hey, let’s give this a shot!” A more strategic approach is to figure out how and why something works, and decide from there.
