What Live Music Can Teach Us About Business Mastery

It was a beautiful summer afternoon in the cool mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado. I was kicking back with my iced tea and listening to live music. Little did I know I was about to learn a major lesson in business mastery that every business owner needs to know.
Here’s how it happened: I wandered into the Bar Down Tavern (highly recommend!), where live music was the hook to bring in a crowd. The fabulous violinist Maureen Bozsan was the featured artist, and cool songwriter Brett Whitson backed her up on guitar. They were so good I hopped a bus and a gondola just to catch them again.
During my last visit to see them, I couldn’t help myself—I hijacked their set list and requested a song they have never performed together. (In my defense, I was fully caffeinated after consuming about four iced teas.) Maureen and Brett had every good reason to say no. But they didn’t. Maureen gave that “what do ya think?” look at Brett, who was busy looking up the lyrics. And then…they went for it. Hard. This dynamic duo knocked it out of the park.
The Essence of Business Mastery
How did these musicians turn this off-the-wall request into a delightful surprise? Their mastery showed up. Masters transcend good to great, improvising and pivoting on a dime—and Maureen and Brett made it look effortless.
In crazy competitive markets, doing our jobs is really the bare minimum. But battle-tested skills and experience show up when the curveballs come. This is a reminder not to let boundaries and the fear of scope creep keep you from opportunities to shine. That’s the essence of business mastery: seeing new requests as a chance to show who you really are.
