The Fastest Way to Get Readers to Click

One of the biggest challenges in content marketing right now is cutting through the noise.
I came across a recent article from Big Think on leadership that highlights a simple way to get more attention. Take a look at the title of the article: “The Gandalf Effect: The Most Important Thing for Any Leader.”
Talk about compelling! The author, or maybe his editor, used a literary allusion that captures readers’ attention. You don’t even have to read Lord of the Rings or watch the movies to know who Gandalf is and understand his authority. That character is so well-known in our culture.
That is your secret weapon for creating content titles that grab attention.
Usually, people use labels and titles based on how they see them, such as their methods or frameworks. They write a headline or title that they think is clever for their industry, using their own lingo, and expect others to figure them out.
That doesn’t work anymore.
A much more effective approach, one that invites all types of readers in, is allusion. Anchor your idea on a familiar literary, TV, or movie character. That works because it creates instant recognition. No translation required. No extra thinking. The decision to click becomes easy.
Content titles that tap into the familiar grab attention long enough for people to lean in. And that hook—that moment—is everything. Think about that the next time you’re writing a blog post headline or a title for your new eBook. What allusions can you incorporate instead of the same old typical business language?
