Cool Projects Lead to Cool Opportunities

Spend some effort creating your own opportunities.

Many of us are on the hunt for new opportunities. But there’s a source that many of us ignore: cool projects that only we can create.

Confused? To help you understand, check out this Fast Company article about Netflix CMO Bozoma Saint John and how she is co-leading a Harvard Business School workshop. What Saint John is doing is a great example of how to create an opportunity where none existed.

The project works for her because of two things:

• A strong brand. Saint John is the “it” girl right now, so it’s easy to produce projects when you can sprinkle star dust. Notice how this workshop adds yet another feather in her cap, though. It’s still about her bad*ss brand. It fits. This is how you leverage all that promo activity that looked like free “busy” work.

• Built-in advocates. Notice Saint John’s partners. She has teamed with former co-workers who had the power to make this happen, especially after she was a smash hit as a remote speaker for their class. It’s easier to follow up with a cool project after the preverbal standing O.

Many of us are great at generating leads. What I love about this direction, though, is there’s no competition. We are the sole source provider. Let’s spend some effort creating our own cool opportunities.
