Why a Growth Mindset Is the Real Key to Next-Level Success

Most of us will try new things. That alone already puts ahead of most of the population. But trying alone won’t break through to the next level. That takes a growth mindset: choosing moves that don’t lean on your usual strengths.

This hit home while I was working with a brilliant consultant. I asked for a specific deliverable.  What they gave me was fine, but not great. When I asked if anything was challenging, they said, “No, it wasn’t hard at all.” I nearly choked on the iced tea I was drinking.

The problem became instantly clear. By staying in their comfort zone, they’d made no real progress. They just sent me more of the same, dressed up with clever wordplay.

To achieve the next level, they needed to take a different route: trying what they hadn’t done before, experimenting, and learning new approaches. That’s the work of a growth mindset in business. But because building new skills can feel slow and uncomfortable, they defaulted to the current playbook. In a world of competing priorities, we’re all guilty of taking that easier road.

Here’s the truth: If you could reach the next level by doing only what you’re already good at, you’d get there without effort. That’s why so many of us stall. Familiar strengths can become a ceiling.

The problem isn’t willingness; we’re a hard-working bunch. The challenge is spotting what sits outside your playbook. That’s why no one grows alone. With outside perspective—coaches, peers, partners—you can develop a growth mindset, see the blind spots, and choose the next best move. Growth is easier (and faster) together.
