How to Make Your Speaking Stand Out

If you’re a speaker, you’re always looking for the best ways to stand out among all the hundreds of speakers in your market. The Annual Speaking Industry Benchmark report by speaker bureau AAE (registration required) can provide great insight into what event organizers expect from speakers and fees.

The report has plenty of great information, including opportunities speakers can use to stand out. Pay attention to these findings:

• Organizers set the bar low on pre-conference activities: Event organizers expect the standards from their keynote presenters—access, social media, and promotion. But why stop there? You could also make a video or have a “meet the speaker” interview on Zoom to create more excitement. Go beyond the standard blog post and pitch a partnership that can lead to additional speaking opportunities after your presentation.

• Be a buzz-maker: Top on event organizers’ wish list: increased attendance and survey responses. The common thread between the two: buzz. Buyers want excitement before the event to drive attendance (see above), as well as after-glow excitement that defines the event and gets rave reviews. Take advantage of all this focus on “experience” by creating moments that spread like wildfire.

The economy is driving a lot of speaker decisions. When you use what our buyers already want as a springboard to stand out, you can make every speech worthy of your fees.

Many thanks to Debra Gardner for putting this study on my radar.
