Learning from Failure: Why Success Is Never a Given

Sometimes the best lessons come during downtime. This summer’s travels reminded me of a powerful truth: Success often comes from learning from failure.
Backstory: I love making cards and I’m always on the hunt for new techniques (and, of course, new supplies). I tried a new tactic for the first time and naturally expected amazing results right away. Spoiler: They didn’t happen.
In fact, the first three attempts were massive failures. The next three were a little better. Then came momentum, and at version #12—BOOM! A breakthrough. And I was off to the races. That’s when I remembered: Real progress comes from persistence and learning from failure.
Here’s the business lesson: Success cannot become an assumption. Even seasoned pros with a strong track record can fall into that trap. Clients expect wins, and eventually we start expecting them of ourselves, too. That’s why learning from failure matters so much. It keeps us grounded and adaptable.
When failure does show up, it’s a double whammy. The first hit is the mistake itself. The second shock is the surprise because we didn’t see it coming. That surprise can blind us to what really happened and distract us from the best next steps.
Moving forward, I’m going into experimental mode. I’ll practice more before presenting recommendations to clients. (I’m still a perfectionist, but that’s for different post.) And if I fail, I won’t be surprised. I’ll focus on making it right and keep learning from failure.
