Let’s Get Personal: Why You Should Share Stories About Yourself

Because videos are so popular now, this article about business videos got on my radar. But the great ideas here got me mulling over a much bigger question: How “personal” should we get with the marketplace?

Do we still need those explainer videos and case studies? Sure. But in this age of authenticity, I think the market wants more. More buyers want to know us. Not what we do, but who we are personally, not just professionally.

Let’s move past this medium and focus on the angles: behind the scenes and “progress.” These are great ways to show the world who we are. They’re a strategic way to get personal without appearing too self-absorbed.

Listen: Personal information you should (and should not) share

Why this works: People want to know that we go through “adventures” just like everyone else. When we show that we’ve “been there, done that,” we create connection and affinity.

Yes, many of us are good at telling stories that humanize our clients or others. But let’s be honest: How much of the personal side of us do we really share? Do we tell stories about ourselves? This is on my to-do list.
