Overcoming Fear in Business: One Small Trick That Works

A recent—and scary—experience helped me discover one small trick for dealing with fear.
Backstory: A recent medical procedure tapped into two of my biggest phobias: needles and severe claustrophobia from my shoulders up. Even though I go through this every year, my anxiety still shoots through the roof. Let’s just say my best self does not show up. (Once again proving that nurses and front-line staff have the patience of saints.)
In the past, music helped soothe this savage beast. But this time it wasn’t available. Another anxiety spike ensued.
So I punted and asked for consistent time updates throughout the process. By breaking down the experience into manageable pieces, I told myself, “I can get through this—five minutes at a time.”
And it worked like a charm.
That one tiny adjustment calmed me down immediately. I was actually fine afterward. Whew!
Between competing priorities and constant curveballs, anxiety shows up all the time in business. As humans, we all have irrational fears that help us avoid big decisions and justify the easy path.
But if we can find the right hack—that one simple maneuver—fear can be hijacked.
The key to overcoming fear in business is figuring out what works for you. It doesn’t require a big change or something innovative.
Ask yourself: What is the one thing that makes YOU feel better?
Find the maneuver that works—and use it every time fear shows up.
