Should You Take That Free Advice?

Between online communities and our network of friends, free advice is at our fingertips. What I love about this dynamic: We all pitch in and assist when our collective time is slow. This right here is why I’ve stayed in this expert/thought leadership space for over 30 years now.

The bigger question: What’s the best use of all those free help offers we get? Where does brainstorming ideas do the most good? Like any other tool, it’s tempting to use free advice in ways that go beyond the boundaries of expectations. Here are two scenarios where these kind offers help the most:

• When you are in exploration mode. You’re not looking for specific help as much as general trends and common obstacles—the inside scoop on the journey ahead (aka look before you leap). Talking to folks who are neck-deep in the market segment can help you make critical decisions.

Listen: When Should You Pay for Advice?

• When you have a quick, one-off question. Specific, multiple choice “polls” between logos, book covers, etc. are a great way to narrow the options. The best insights here is why, so be sure to ask that in the comments section. Sometimes you need a slice of bread, not the whole loaf.

Even with the best intentions, free help can sometimes do more harm than good. By knowing the role this kind of advice can play in your business, you can use this helpful opportunity strategically.
