In this era of content overload, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of voices. It’s time to get strategic about rising above the noise.

A recent Fast Company article about singer Selena Gomez’s new cooking show discusses a great example of my favorite tactic to stand out: mashups. Also known as juxtaposition, mashups combine unrelated items (the more disparate, the better) and creates a foundation of intrigue. Why Gomez’s show works:

• She is one of us: Because Gomez isn’t a natural chef, she’s now one of us. She’s successful in another area but not here. This is what I call the “fish out of water” strategy. It’s a great way for seasoned pros to leverage their notoriety. Ask yourself: “How do I make myself a ‘newbie’ to my community? How do I make myself more relatable?”

• The element of surprise: Because Gomez is out of her element, the viewers don’t know what will happen next. Combine that with her sense of humor, and viewers stay tuned. Ask yourself: “How do I surprise my community? Is it deliberate or a fluke?”

People don’t use mashups and juxtaposition as often as they should. The powerful combination of the unrelated can be an instant attention-getter. Remember to use this tool when planning for upcoming content marketing.
