Use FOMO to Your Advantage

Personal story: I was visiting family when someone popped out their new iPhone and took a picture of us. I didn’t have confidence the photo would turn out well in such a dark room. When I saw the photo, my heart skipped a beat. Oh my! The lighting was perfect. So, guess what my next best purchase will be. Yep, that phone.

Keep in mind that I was perfectly happy with the older version. Before that moment, I ignored any promotions for a new phone. But once I saw that photo, those trade-in offers got my attention.

Kids have a name for this: FOMO, the fear of missing out. Can we thought leaders use this dynamic to our advantage? You betcha. This is a great strategy for those buyers who are happy with what they have. Until they see what I call the irresistible alternative.

Listen: How to Create FOMO Opportunities

Too many of us seek and go after the uncomfortable. What about those who like what they have? Are they a lost cause? Nope.

Here’s how you attract the comfortable: by showing them what they’re missing. If your buyers don’t believe they can have something, then you “surprise” them (not tell them) that they can have it, guess what happens next? Yep, those same decision makers want what you just showed them. And they want it yesterday.

People decide what they like based on their current environment. Change that, and folks will make a move fast.
