After much seed planting, you get the call. You’ve been invited to give a big speech or publish an article in a prominent publication. Your opportunity to shine has arrived.

So, you put some elbow grease in this thing. You burn the midnight oil. You get out there and then … you get kudos and applause, but not much else. What happened? Why didn’t the clients/other opportunities roll in?

I get asked that a lot. Here’s what usually happens:

• Not enough attraction. This is the #1 reason why great opportunities don’t generate more opportunities. Yep, you were insightful. That’s why you got the kudos. But if you don’t stand out, there’s no reason to act. If folks don’t know what to do with you, they do nothing.

• Not enough momentum. Many folks think the XXX is enough to attract opportunities. Not anymore. Now you have to promote before you give that speech or publish that article, and promote it after. Nothing happens when there is a vacuum.

Our performance in the limelight usually is not the problem. It’s the lack of momentum and attraction. How we position and what we do before our big shot makes the difference.
