A Strategic Use of Statistics

As many of you know, I am a statistics nerd. I am endlessly fascinated in how stats are used to strengthen a message.

A common problem: Too many stats make people tune out. But this infographic from Social Media Today is a great example of how to pack a lot of information into a small space. What you can copy:

• From broad to specific. Note the demographics kick things off, then the other more granular stuff follows. It would be tempting to put the last part (Instagram for business) first. The authors didn’t take the bait. Like everything else, stats need context. The demo stuff allows the reader to decide if Instagram is worthy of attention. So, before you start quoting a bunch of numbers, set the stage.

• Categories rule. This is your best option when there’s a lot of data. The simpler the better. Again, check out the order. The first part sets the stage, and the second part gives practical yet still general advice about what works. The third part goes in for the close with the focus on business. It’s a very strategic approach.

Yep, stats are a sure-fire way to promote your business case. However, too many of us stick of bunch of numbers in a white paper without considering the presentation and the context. Those things matter – a lot. This is also another great reason to explore infographics.
