I recently had to go through an annual process that triggers one of my biggest fears. I’m not talking about mild discomfort, but anticipatory panic. In my desperation, I asked the staff if they would try something new that I thought might help. It was simple and easy, so they agreed.

And it worked wonders.

Watching one small change dissolve something that felt immovable was a dopamine hit of epic proportions. It felt like I had cracked a secret code.

And that’s when it hit me: This is how to stand out in sales. Buyers want the same experience from us. They want to be surprised and delighted. Doing that helps you stand out and convinces them you are the best option.

What I learned: The best experiences do not require grand gestures or dramatic overhauls. Small, thoughtful shifts can make a huge difference, especially when vulnerability shows up.

When thinking about how to stand out in sales and in crowded markets, take a step back and reconsider what you’re doing. Yes, you want to bring your best, and sometimes you need to break out of your comfort zone. But you don’t have to stage a big intervention. Small, impactful steps during the sales process can change the game in your favor.
