Want AI to Cite Your Content? Start Here.

Now that AI-powered search is the new normal, it’s time to focus on what really works. What makes content more likely to be cited by platforms like ChatGPT and Google AI Mode?
Semrush researchers analyzed thousands of AI citations to find out what it takes to get cited by AI. This MarketingProfs article includes a great infographic that summarize the findings.
Here are two big changes you must make if you want your online content to get cited by AI:
• Start with a summary. Anything you publish online should include a direct answer or key takeaway up front. Context and explanation can come later. Clear and concise gets cited. Too much information gets ignored.
• Simple language and structure. Gone are the days when industry jargon makes you look smart. Long-winded articles that begin with a story are out too. AI favors shorter formats such as lists, bullet points, and Q&A.
These changes are easy to make. It’s more of a mindset shift than learning a new skill. To get cited by AI, we simply need to let go of a writing style that served us well for a long time.
