Freedom Is an Inside Job

As you read this, we’re packing up for our annual cross-country road trip. It’s our fourth—enough times to figure out what works and what doesn’t. I think we’ve cracked the code.

There’s freedom in hitting the road. You see places at the ground level. You visit people where they live. I’m grateful to experience life this up close and personal.

For this freedom, though, you have to give up some things. In this case, I had to give up routine. I had to work through my fear of not serving clients well enough. I had to learn how to roll with the punches uncertainty can bring.

I like systems; I see them as a container for my creativity. But there comes a point where our way of getting things done becomes our prison. We can break free; our independence depends on what we’re willing to give up. The saying is true: Freedom is not free.

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! May we all be independent inside and out.
