How to Respond to Criticism on Social Media without Looking Weak

A young white woman with long blonde hair, wearing a white shirt and a beige sweater, in an office looks at her phone with a puzzled expression while sitting at a desk with a laptop and papers, suggesting she is reacting to a message or comment and wondering how to respond to criticism on social media.

I’m seeing a lot of low-key personal attacks online these days. When you’re the target, knowing how to respond to criticism on social media is important. It can make the difference between looking like a powerful authority or appearing weak.

In the past, not responding to subtle disrespect was effective. Not anymore. Letting others talk down to you without correction not only galvanizes those who agree with the attacker,  but it also plants seeds of doubt with lurkers who don’t know you well.

How to Respond to Criticism on Social Media

My favorite tactic when someone criticizes me is what I call the pointed reminder. It goes something like this:

Them: Do your research and you’ll see that ….

You: My primary research comes from (mention two criteria here). If you knew me outside this platform, you’d know that I (fill in your experience). If you have a different experience, that’s fine. Let’s agree to disagree without disparaging each other’s expertise.

The key thing to remember: When you respond to criticism on social media, you want to match the tone but dispute the assertion. The verbiage calls out the impact while still being respectful.

It’s possible to correct false assertions without giving up your dignity. You can take the high road and still respond. It’s time to start correcting critical comments made in the name of professional engagement.
