I talk a lot about drilling down into nuanced territory. Rebecca Morgan’s LinkedIn post about leadership in the manufacturing arena is a great example of how to use comparisons to stand out.

What makes this tactic effective (and that we can copy):

• Great examples. The age-old question about being liked vs. being respected has been answered many times. But the short examples at the beginning of the article point that the post will be different. The trick here is to be specific yet still brief. When using comparisons to make your point, you have to start out strong or get lost in the shuffle.

• No villains. Note the reasons behind the mistrust. Being misguided or refusing to believe in reality are the culprits, not flagrant ethical lapses. This gives a heads-up on a great distinction: It’s possible (and highly probable) to mistrust leaders we like. This juxtaposition is a credible alternative to conventional wisdom. So, let’s move past the shady behavior that everyone else covers.

What I love about comparisons: They open the door to nuance. And when we display this deeper understanding, we let folks know that we can navigate any tricky situation.
