Why Buyers Read Your Long Content

Ever wonder if anyone is reading your content? According to recent study by B2B service provider platform Clutch, the answer is yes but with caveats.
The good news: reading is not dead, as most of us (80%) read between one and fifteen articles per week. The downside is that only 32% read to the end. And over half will skim the headline before deciding whether to read at all. (Guilty as charged on that last point.)
In other words, we are a brutally selective bunch.
The deciding factors revolve around needs and relevance. For a quick answer, 45% want short summaries. To deeply understand the subject, the preferences switch, as 35% want a long-form (1,000 words and over) article.
So, the big question: how do folks decide they care enough to do that deep dive? This study shows two gatekeepers that drives that decision:
- 81% prefer watching a video to reading an article but that doesn’t mean long explainer videos. 70% use video to check out a topic before doing the deep dive with a longer article. YouTube is the place to be for short videos that promote longer content.
- AI summaries. While over half (56%) say that these overviews are enough, 83% report that they will go on to read a full article before buying.
These findings point to what we already know, that our content marketing efforts must have a wide variety of formats. The key is alignment. Make sure your short form articles can promote the longer pieces. No piece can stand alone anymore.
