When looking for outside help with your business, it’s tempting to sign up with folks who appear “famous.” Their presence is dazzling and impressive, giving an air that they can help with everything and anything, and that they give personalized advice.

The opposite is often the case, however. Here are two reasons why signing up with them is a bad idea.

• They’re too busy to provide individual attention. Due to high demand, many tout a one-size-fits-all “process” or focus on group activities. While it’s tempting to think you can get into the “inner circle” that way, it usually doesn’t happen. So, ask yourself “How much individual attention do I want from them?”

• They provide help you don’t need. Anyone working for the famous has the inside advantage of name recognition and market momentum. If you’re a startup, don’t count on them to get you the same results. A better option: People who have taken fellow newbies from A to Z.
