How We Pick Our Partners

Notice how so many folks are partnering with each other? Me too. Which is why I’m sharing this Strategy+Business article about M&As.

Look past the details and size of companies. Check out this finding: focusing on targets that leverage one’s key capabilities provides the greatest chance of M&A success. Translation: stick to what you are good at and find other places and partners where those gifts can do the most good.

To grow (or get more sales), it’s very tempting to take on clients and partners that don’t quite match with our gifts. Rarely ends well. This article uncovers the key for any of us who are expanding into new areas: intentions.

Be brutally honest here. Is your intention to expand your network or to use your gifts? It’s easy to justify “expanding” on what we do in the spirit of growth. In my experience, this is the #1 reason why partnerships don’t work. When the rubber meets the road, and expectations are not met…well, our real intention shows up. Just sayin’…
