One of the most common questions clients ask me: What am I doing wrong? The conversation often starts with the person tells me a long story about how they aren’t getting results after implementing big marketing plans. My answer usually starts with “it depends.”

Lackluster marketing results usually fall under two categories: 1) you are doing something wrong or 2) the marketplace is working against you. How can you tell the difference? The biggest clue lies in the response you get from buyers. Let’s drill down on two possibilities:

• You get radio silence. What happens after you show up? Do you get rave reviews after that webinar or Zoom appearance? Then you’re on the right track. Folks just need to connect you to their needs. If you hear crickets? Yeah, that’s a clue.

• Your biggest fans aren’t hiring you. The two most-common reasons: 1) they can’t hire you because of a budget freeze or an internal barrier beyond their control or 2) they don’t think they need you right now. The key: If they are hiring other folks, then #2 is the “winner.”
