Social media is becoming a pay-to-play world, so platforms are rolling out new features to make ads more effective. The good news is ads on those and other digital marketing platforms are more targeted than ever.

For example, “Reddit’s ad system will highlight more relevant communities based on your chosen key terms, which will help you expand your targeting to reach more of the right people with your ads,” according to a Social Media Today article.

Ad Targeting Changes Impact Digital Marketing Strategies

These changes to ad targeting are symptoms of a bigger change underfoot, though. The game for becoming well-known is changing.

Standing out from the competition is still crucial, especially in markets that are already saturated. However, achieving front-runner status is becoming increasingly expensive. The days of relying solely on word-of-mouth promotion, earned through hard work and dedication, are long gone. Nowadays, you must allocate a budget for social media advertising, paid search, and other digital marketing strategies to stay ahead.

The big questions you must ask at your next strategic planning session: What are you willing to do to boost your reputation? How much are you willing to pay for prominence? Getting clear on this now will drive good decisions later.

My prediction: Ads won’t be used only to generate leads for specific revenue streams. Watch for companies to use them to increase brand awareness and for list-building campaigns. We thought leaders need to revisit how we get well-known and what our investment for that effort looks like. Pay-to-play in digital marketing is becoming a requirement.
